Transformational Leadership Literature Review Essay

Introduction For centuries leaders have been analyzed in order to determine what the traits and characteristics of a successful leader are. Leadership, as defined by Koontz and Weihrich (2008) is â€Å"the art or a process of influencing people so that they will strive willingly and enthusiastically toward the achievement of group goals† (p. 311). Leadership plays an important role in employee’s participation, creativity, recruitment to an organization, their commitment to the organization, and productivity levels. Over the years, there have been a number of theories surrounding leadership such as the â€Å"Great Man† theory, which, according to Riaz and Haider (2010), â€Å"assumes that leaders are born and have innate qualities, therefore, leaders†¦show more content†¦These types of leaders, according to Avolio (1991) possess the characteristics of individual consideration, intellectual stimulation, inspirational motivation, and idealized influence. This paper will examine the outcomes that are a direct result of transformational leaders who exhibit these types of traits such as job satisfaction and organizational commitment, job stress, safety, supervisor satisfaction, team, performance, and general. Job Satisfaction and Organizational Commitment Outcomes According to Hyde (2008), â€Å"Culture is determined by how people behave, and the only way to change culture is to change behaviors† (p. 6). A key aspect of changing behavior is enabling (empowering) employees to make decisions and create change within their work scope. By giving employees the power to make changes not only improves their morale, but also benefits the company in which they work by increasing their productivity. According to Marshall, et. Al (2006), â€Å"Allowing employees to make decisions increases their job satisfaction and sense of responsibility and translates into improvements in the quality and timeliness with which duties are performed, freeing management for more significant matters† (p. 39). By giving decision making authority to followers, transformation leaders are using what Bass (1991) referred to as psychological empowerment. The Horror Of The Island - 889 Words

The movie the Island is primarily focused on this so called Utopian world that is referenced to some as heaven. Its taken place in the year 2019, during this time the rest of the outside world is essentially polluted. Amongst those contaminated were only a selected few gathered and formed a whole community that were saved. After the small community was â€Å"saved† from their polluted surroundings, they were taken to a remote settlement. Within in this settlement people expected to live under Utopian principles. There was absolutely no freedom of will, this community was oppressed and in a fully controlled situation. Everything was thought out and previously structured, this controlled spanned from what to wear, what to eat, where to go and types of jobs. Entirely all aspects of their lives was predetermined for them. Most of the community rested in complete expectancy when an event was held to announce that one person has the chance to reach the gates of an idyllic nirvana na med â€Å"The Island†. The Island is primarily the safe zone escaping the disastrous and chaotic happenings on Earth, a place where each individual can enjoy a life. The main character Lincoln Six Echo played by Ewan McGregor awaits to see if his is the lucky ticket to reach such a place. While doing so he and his close comrade Jordan Two Delta played by Scarlett Johansson start to uncover the actual truths about what The Island is ultimately about. ABC Company is an expanding technology company that has a workforce of 170 employees. It develops and distributes small electronic devices. The company has recently designed and developed small remote surveillance cameras that can be put to use for security purposes. The company has won a government contract that includes supplying of cameras to agencies within the state. The human resource department of the company has been given the responsibility of hiring new staff to fulfil the contract. Therefore, in this assignment, we will discuss the case from human resource managements view point. Staffing Models Staffing models are the ways in which an organisation decides to hire staff for its project or upcoming work. Staffing models can depend from company to company, job profiles and urgency of recruitment. In this case, the two appropriate staffing models would be labour outsource or direct recruitment. Both staffing models are equally good and have importance of their own. In direct recruitment, the company will be able to maintain a better control over the hiring process and can spend more time in selecting the best suitable candidates. Therefore, the company can only make changes during the development phase and can make as many changes it wants to, depending upon the information available and job expectations of the company. Employee Turnover Rates The following methods can be used to bring down the employee turnover rates in a business organisation: Training and development training and development programs are the ones that help the employees in improving their skills and competencies. It helps them in learning new things and building their career path through the things they learn. As they learn new skills and techniques, they can make progress in their careers and can become more competitive. As a result, a company offering regular training and development programs to its employees is always able to bring down the turnover rates. Performance management performance management systems are very effective in fostering a performance oriented environment. It creates a competitive and challenging environment in the workplace and the opportunity of rewards attached with performances increases the interest of the employees in their jobs. Their motivation increases and they tend to stick to their organisations. Thus, the turnover rates come down eventually. Employee engagement employee turnover rates are also high when the employers are not able to engage the employees in their work. If the employees are not engaged with their work or the employer, they feel bored and have a higher tendency to quit.
